Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an advanced teeth aligning system that uses custom-made clear aligners to gently move your teeth into a more desirable position.

The Invisalign specialists at Alpha Dental take a precise digital 3D image of your teeth using the iTero®  digital scanning system, which they use to map out the movement of your teeth and create your specialized set of aligners. The advanced imaging system lets you see exactly how your teeth move into position and how long it will take.

What types of bite conditions can Invisalign treat?

You might be worried that Invisalign may not be right for you, but the clear aligners fix a number of conditions, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crowded or gapped teeth
  • Open bite or crossbite

The aligners can also correct any other misalignment of your teeth. The Invisalign specialists at Alpha Dental determine if you’re a good fit for Invisalign after an oral examination of your teeth and mouth.

How does Invisalign work?

After the Invisalign specialists at Alpha Dental map out your treatment plan, a set of custom-made aligners are made. To move your teeth into position, you wear one set of aligners for one to two weeks for 20 to 22 hours each day, then change to the next set. The dental specialist provides your treatment plan so you know what to expect.

You can take the aligners out to eat and brush and floss your teeth. Keep your aligners clean with the special Invisalign Cleaning System or with a soft bristle toothbrush and toothpaste.

How long does treatment take?

Invisalign treatment time varies from patient-to-patient but averages 12 to 18 months. You may start to notice a change in your smile and teeth after a few weeks of treatment.

To help you stay on track, the team at Alpha Dental recommends regular check-ups in the office every four to six weeks.

What happens after Invisalign treatment?

To keep your teeth in place after Invisalign treatment you need to wear the Vivera®  retainer. Like the Invisalign aligners, the Vivera retainer is also clear and comfortable.

Initially, you may need to wear the retainer all the time, similar to the Invisalign aligners. But as your teeth get accustomed to their new position, you can keep your teeth straight wearing them while you sleep.
